Impact! Virginia:installing underskirting

From Monday July 20th through Friday July 25th, volunteers with Impact! Virginia worked in collaboration with Renewing Homes Greater Augusta to make critical repairs and modifications to the dwellings of low income homeowners throughout our community.

Impact! Virginia is a youth mission organized by the Virginia Baptist Mission Board.  This year the leadership of Impact! Virginia choose to collaborate with Renewing Homes Greater Augusta and serve low income homeowners in Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County.  As a result of this collaboration, over 200 youth volunteers and their adult leaders were spread across 16 homes in our region.  By the end of the Impact! week over 7,300 volunteer hours had been spent in the planning and execution of some pretty major projects.  Included in the week’s projects were four roof replacements, four wheelchair ramps, and nearly countless repairs needed to ensure the “safe, warm, dry, and accessible” conditions of the selected homes.

Many thanks are due to all those who made the Impact! work week possible.  Among these are the Impact! youth volunteers, the adult crew chiefs and supervisors, the lunch providers, and the local vendors from which Renewing Homes Greater Augusta receives such terrific service.

Mission at Massanetta:Mission at Massanetta

In the summer of 2009, Massanetta Springs began the Mission@Massanetta program in which youth and adults could come to the Shenandoah Valley, live in the Camp Masanetta cabins, and go out into the community to complete critical home repairs with Renewing Homes Greater Augusta.  Each year since 2010, a group from First Presbyterian Church of Cheraw, SC has come to partner with Renewing Homes.

This a team of nine youths and adults worked on four projects in a very busy and productive week.  Working under the capable guidance of longtime RHGA volunteer David Waterman, the team repaired the roof, build a new entrance deck and replaced the underskirting for Mrs. K.  From there the team coated the roof for Mrs. H after which they replaced Mrs. D’s missing siding and repaired her front steps.  Finally, the team repaired Mrs. R’s rotted kitchen floor and replaced her kitchen cabinets.

First Presbyterian Church of Cheraw has always been a wonderful partner and their good work has spread causing other churches from their area to travel to Massanetta Springs and work with RHGA on other projects.  We look forward to ongoing collaboration with Massanetta Springs and the next visit from the fine folks from First Presbyterian Church of Cheraw.
